I Began My Journey to Becoming a Therapist Through an Unexpected Path

Hi, I’m Michelle Cauley. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Cauley & Associates, a Beverly Hills-based group practice dedicated to helping adults, couples, and organizations live and work better.

My path here wasn’t a straight line. I grew up in a small town in Texas, where I watched family and community members care for each other in simple, everyday ways. That left an impression on me early. I moved to Los Angeles at almost eighteen and started college with an AA in Merchandise Marketing, before realizing that wasn’t where my curiosity actually lived. I went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Rehabilitation Counseling with a minor in Applied Gerontology, then a Master of Social Work focused on families and children. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2004, and I’ve been practicing independently ever since.

I share that winding path because I think it matters. Growth rarely moves in a straight line for anyone, and I don’t expect it to for my clients either.

My Areas of Focus

I work with adults and couples navigating high-functioning depression, anxiety and stress, work-related burnout, relationship challenges, grief and loss, and the everyday weight of holding a lot together. I also offer coaching and consultation focused on personal growth, cognitive reframing, and professional resilience.

Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and capable, strong on the outside, while feeling overwhelmed or stuck underneath. Helping someone pause, hear their own inner voice, and rewrite the scripts they’ve been running on is central to how I work.

    How I Approach Therapy

I want to understand where your patterns started, not just how they show up today. Much of my work is psychodynamic, tracing the line between childhood experience and the habits, fears, and reactions that still drive you as an adult. This is where I do my best work.

Alongside that, I draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to look closely at how you think, catching the negative patterns and reshaping them so you can notice them in the moment and actually change course. Narrative work matters here too. You carry a story about who you are, but that story was shaped by circumstance, not carved in stone. It can be rewritten.

For clients who want to move quickly, I bring in a solution-focused approach: name the concern, unpack it, build a few concrete tools, and keep moving. Emotional intelligence runs through all of it, since how you understand and manage emotion touches nearly everything else we work on.

However we get there, therapy should feel like a partnership, a space where you’re heard and supported, while also being gently challenged to grow.

    What Makes My Practice Unique

I founded Cauley & Associates to offer more than traditional therapy. Our practice blends clinical care with coaching, crisis management, corporate consulting, and educational workshops, supporting individuals, couples, and organizations in ways that feel personally relevant.

At the center of it all is one belief. Mental health is essential to overall well-being, and empathy, awareness, and collaboration can genuinely change lives, not just individually, but across teams and organizations too. Whether I’m leading a workshop, consulting with a team, or sitting with a client one-on-one, I’m energized by helping people feel lighter, more capable, and more hopeful about what’s ahead.

    Teaching and Giving Back

Alongside my clinical work, I’m an adjunct professor, training graduate-level social work students preparing to enter the field. I also spent years working within the public school system earlier in my career, which shaped how I think about supporting people at every stage of life, not just in a private practice setting.

    Outside of the Office

Outside of work, I love to travel and experience different cultures firsthand. I’m a genuine foodie, always looking to try new cuisines, and I enjoy dabbling in cooking myself. I have a real appreciation for interior design, maybe a different life for me somewhere. I enjoy attending live sports, spending time with family and friends, and music is central to pretty much everything I do.
